Charlotte Cuypers, DVM, PhD In this module, we take a structured and practical approach to anesthesia for elective procedures, with a focus on safe patient management before, during, and after surgery.
You will learn how to perform a thorough pre-anesthetic examination and how to choose an appropriate anesthetic protocol based on the type of procedure, the patient, and the expected level of pain. Particular attention is paid to perioperative pain management, including analgesia before, during, and after the procedure.
The module also covers practical aspects of anesthetic management in the operating room, such as patient positioning on the surgical table, the basic principles of monitoring and ventilation, and the recognition and management of blood pressure abnormalities. Recovery is addressed as an essential part of anesthesia, with emphasis on how to monitor the patient closely and respond appropriately during the post-anesthetic period.
Clinical examples are used throughout the module to show how these principles can be applied in practice. Examples include anesthesia for castration, OCD surgery, and sarcoid removal.
In addition, the module discusses common technical and equipment-related problems that may occur during anesthesia. You will learn how to approach issues such as leaks in the anesthetic system, unreliable blood pressure measurements, difficulties interpreting capnography, and airway obstruction.
By the end of the module, you should have a clearer and more systematic approach to planning, monitoring, and managing anesthesia for routine elective procedures, while being better prepared to recognize and troubleshoot common problems that can arise during anesthesia.

Charlotte Cuypers, DVM, PhD Charlotte Cuypers studeerde in 2015 af aan de Faculteit Diergeneeskunde. Nadien ging ze aan de slag als anesthesist bij de Vakgroep Heelkunde, Anesthesie en Orthopedie van de Grote Huisdieren.
In de kliniek is ze dagelijks actief als anesthesist en begeleidt ze studenten, interns en anesthesisten in opleiding. In 2020 startte ze haar doctoraat binnen dezelfde vakgroep. Ze verdedigde haar proefschrift “Gamma hydroxy butyric acid: are we sleeping on it?” met succes in maart 2026.
Door haar werk als anesthesist heeft Charlotte een brede expertise ontwikkeld in pijnmanagement, waarmee ze zowel klinisch als academisch sterk begaan is. Ze is een gepassioneerde dierenarts en docent: haar grootste plezier haalt ze uit het delen van kennis over anesthesie, maar ook in haar pilatesstudio in Gent staat ze graag voor de groep
