This module will be available no later than October 1st, 2026. You will receive an email when the module is available.

This module focuses on the practical application of anesthesia and sedation principles to commonly performed standing procedures in horses. Emphasis is placed on selecting safe and effective protocols while maintaining adequate analgesia, patient cooperation, and procedural conditions.

Topics include:

  • Pre-sedation assessment – evaluating temperament, cardiovascular status, concurrent disease, pain, and factors that may influence the safety or effectiveness of sedation.
  • Protocol selection – choosing and adapting sedative and analgesic protocols according to the individual patient, anticipated duration, and invasiveness of the procedure.
  • Fasting considerations – determining when fasting is indicated and balancing procedural requirements against potential gastrointestinal and metabolic consequences.
  • Procedure-specific analgesia – integrating systemic sedation with appropriate local and regional analgesic techniques to improve comfort and reduce the amount of sedation required.
  • Dentistry – sedation and analgesia for routine and more invasive dental procedures, including considerations for prolonged interventions.
  • Standing laparoscopy – achieving sufficient sedation and analgesia while maintaining safe positioning and minimizing movement during abdominal procedures.
  • Geriatric and ataxic horses – adapting protocols for patients with reduced postural stability, neurological deficits, or concurrent systemic disease, with particular attention to avoiding excessive sedation and worsening ataxia.
  • Monitoring during standing sedation – assessing depth of sedation, cardiovascular and respiratory function, degree of ataxia, analgesia, and patient responsiveness throughout the procedure.
  • Protocol adjustment during the procedure – recognizing inadequate sedation or analgesia and safely titrating additional drugs when required.
  • Recovery and post-procedural considerations – monitoring the horse as sedation wears off and recogn

Ze verdedigde haar proefschrift “Gamma hydroxy butyric acid: are we sleeping on it?” met succes in maart 2026.
